Palm Springs AmDocs Fest to screen Pixar animator’s reimagination of Ukrainian folk song

For generations, Ukrainians have sang the folk song “Galya Carries Water,” which tells the story of two young lovers in a small village.

The song details how farm boy Ivanko and shy village girl Galya meet, their feelings for each other and their plans to meet again. Later in the song, however, they’re upset with each other, and no explanation is given. The verse that shares what happened has been lost to time, and Masha Ellsworth, lead technical director in the characters department at Pixar, has spent her whole life wondering what led to their heartbreak.

With no answers available to her, she decided to provide her own. Her independent short film, “Bound,” brings to life the star-crossed lovers’ fate as a cross-stitched work of art and provides some insight in their quarrel. The short film will screen at Palm Springs’ American Documentary and Animation Film Festival on March 31 at the Palm Springs Cultural Center.
